Mrs. Beasley-Schmitts's class at South School has been working on a project in my classroom that is multifaceted…we started by writing a story/sentences about “if it lived in a pumpkin”…then we switched to math and did some estimating. The students had to choose the size of their balloons and then estimate how many strips of paper it would take to cover them. Then students converted their balloon pumpkins into the “pumpkin house” that they wrote about. The students really enjoyed this project!

First graders in Mrs. Collins's class have been working hard on passing their iReady lessons! They received a pumpkin party for filling up their iReady incentive chart. They did a pumpkin investigation by describing the pumpkin, estimating how many seeds were in the pumpkin, and then counting the seeds using ten frames.

Our Firsties at South School have been working on a pumpkin investigation for the past two weeks during reading and science time. We studied the pumpkin life cycle, made pumpkin diagrams, used adjectives to describe pumpkins, measured and discussed pumpkin attributes, and read lots of pumpkin-themed books! For the final day of our pumpkin unit, students carved pumpkins! They had so much fun working with their friends to carve a pumpkin and design silly faces for me to cut out. We had a great time!

This week, South School First Graders read the book "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes. The book's theme centers on the importance of being yourself and being proud of yourself. In celebration of our uniqueness, our class drew life-sized self-portraits. After we were finished, each student could share their portrait with the class, and the class discussed kind words that described the student. These words were written on their self-portraits. It was so fun to see the unique student portraits and the kind words of their classmates.
